I Need One Bag for Three Weeks in Europe – These Are the 10 I’m Considering

I need a bag for Europe.

Which sounds simple until I explain that I would like it to be lightweight, comfortable, spacious without being enormous, secure enough for crowded cities and, obviously, cute enough that it does not ruin every outfit I have packed.

I also need room for the things I inevitably acquire during the day – a bottle of water, a book, something edible, something ceramic and at least one purchase I absolutely could have made at home.

A full zip would be ideal, although this search has taught me that apparently the fashion industry considers zippers incompatible with beautiful totes.

So I have adjusted expectations. After looking at far too many bags, these are the ones still in contention.

The practical favorite, but make it butter yellow.

There is a reason Le Pliage has been carried through airports, universities and commutes for decades. It is ridiculously light, folds down, zips completely closed and somehow holds much more than it looks like it should.

The butter yellow is what changes it for me. It still does all the sensible travel-bag things, but it feels cheerful and intentional rather than purely functional.

The interior is basically one enormous room, so pouches would be doing some heavy administrative work.

Still, very difficult to argue with this one.

Unfortunately, this is the one I actually want.

The oversized shape, woven raffia, dark leather trim and scalloped edge are exactly what I imagined when I thought Europe tote.

It looks like it belongs with linen trousers, flat sandals and a market somewhere in Tuscany.

It is large enough to be useful without looking like luggage, and unlike some woven totes, the straps look genuinely comfortable.

Does it zip? Of course not.

The Reformation Isabella is therefore less responsible travel decision and more the bag I would like to be carrying while making irresponsible purchases in Italy.

Still deeply in contention, because she cute.

The cool-girl wildcard.

This is the one that looks like it has somewhere better to be.

The green, the ruching, the metallic details – it feels far more fashion than travel, which is exactly why I like it.

It still gives me a removable interior zip compartment for the things I absolutely do not want floating around loose, and the shape is roomy enough to be useful without drifting into giant beach-bag territory.

This is the bag I would pick when I want something practical enough to function all day but still interesting enough to carry the outfit a little.

The minimalist option. She’s that girl with the clean slicked-back hair.

This is what I would choose if I wanted something lightweight and practical without the very recognizable Longchamp look.

It is roomy, streamlined and discreet enough to work with almost anything I pack.

COS is particularly good at making functional things feel oddly architectural, which is helpful when the contents are considerably less glamorous than the exterior suggests.

Think sunscreen, snacks, wipes and a receipt I will carry around for nine days.

The personality pick with a bejewelled phone case inside.

Rumor has it the Boat and Tote was originally designed to carry ice, which tells you almost everything you need to know about its general constitution.

It is sturdy, properly closes, comes in several sizes and has that classic American canvas-tote look that somehow works equally well at an airport, market or beach.

I also love the monogram option because apparently giving a bag initials makes it an extended family member. Also, hello embroidery machine. I am always looking for an excuse to fire you up.

My hesitation is simply weight and stiffness.

This is a bag designed to survive.

Rome may be doing enough surviving for both of us.

The woven-leather temptation at a much friendlier price.

It has the rich texture and relaxed shape I keep gravitating toward, but feels slightly less precious than some of the more expensive woven options.

It is also roomy enough for a full day out and has interior pockets, including a zipped one for anything important – aka my passport.

The main bag closes with a magnetic snap rather than a zipper, so I would probably use a small zipped pouch inside for valuables.

But for a normal everyday tote?

Extremely convincing.

This is the bag my wardrobe picked.

The bottle green speaks for everyone in the room when it says: I go with everything.

The woven leather, soft structure and rich colour are exactly right for summer travel. It looks better slightly worn in and somehow makes a very simple outfit feel much more considered.

It is also completely open.

Which is probably part of why it looks so relaxed and beautiful.

For strolling, dinners, markets and slower travel days, I love it.

For a packed train while holding a toddler and mentally tracking three other objects?

My nervous system has submitted a complaint.

You’re coming home with me, but you are probably not getting on a flight with me, babe.

Now this looks like it has already booked the villa.

The raffia, exaggerated long straps and big easy shape are very I bought this on holiday, except obviously I did not, because I found it at Anthropologie while aggressively researching tote bags.

It comes with a removable inner zipped pouch, which I appreciate because at least my passport can have boundaries even if the rest of the bag does not.

Very vacation. Very cute. Security department remains unconvinced.

The one who absolutely does not care if somebody spills something on her.

This is neoprene, machine washable and enormous enough to absorb the general debris of a full travel day.

It also comes with an inner zipped pouch and enough personality to keep it firmly out of sad utility-bag territory.

This is the tote for snacks, water, sunscreen, toddler chaos and anything else that may or may not leak.

The red one that makes the argument for leather all over again.

This is pure outfit energy.

The shape is soft and oversized without being sloppy, the red does most of the styling for you, and it has the kind of presence that makes jeans and a white shirt feel like an actual outfit.

It also has a removable interior pouch with a zip, which at least gives my passport somewhere civilized to live, even though the main bag itself stays open.

And yes, leather adds weight.

But sometimes the prettiest option gets to make its case anyway.

How does one pick a winner when they’re all winning for different versions of your day.

Some bags are for airports. Some are for markets. Some are for errands. Some are for the days when you want the bag itself to do half the styling.

Which is probably why finding one perfect tote feels impossible in the first place.

So, I still haven’t picked one. We’ll see who makes the flight.
