I really thought butter yellow would have exhausted itself by now. It had all the makings of a color we were going to collectively overdo.
We were seeing it on dresses, handbags, nails, shoes, kitchens, phone cases, appliances and eventually, seemingly, anything that could physically accept pigment was available in butter yellow.
Usually this is where a trend begins its descent.
But it didn’t and if anything, I like it more now?
Maybe because butter yellow itself has changed.
Or rather, the way we’re using it has.
The first wave felt very SHE IS THE COLOR!
Now it feels quieter.
A cashmere tee.
A manicure.
A lamp.
A little shoulder bag.
A phone case.

It has entered its normal life era
And unlike some yellows, it doesn’t really ask you to build an outfit or a room around it.
It just slips in. With denim, chocolate brown, cream, white, natural wood, suede, gold jewellery, even navy.
It behaves almost like a neutral, except it actually has a pulse.
And it works in more than one season
This is probably what finally convinced me it wasn’t going anywhere.
Butter yellow originally felt very summer.
Lace tops. Linen dresses. Bare shoulders. Sandals.
Then fall came around and somehow it looked even better next to brown suede, darker denim and cashmere.
Now we’re heading toward another year of it and the color doesn’t feel stale.
It just feels… established.
Less trend forecast. More color option.
Which is how a lot of genuinely good trends eventually earn permanence.
We stop talking about them constantly and just keep wearing them.
Which brings me to the things I actually want in it “On Me”
OPI Butter Yellow Nail Polish
A soft butter-yellow manicure that feels more interesting than nude but still easy enough to wear every day.
This may still be my favorite way to wear the color.
It’s softer than bright yellow, but more interesting than another pale pink or nude.
It also somehow makes a summer tan look approximately 17% better. (I have done no research on this number).
Quince Mongolian Cashmere Tee in Butter Yellow
The piece that proves butter yellow can move straight from summer into fall.
I told you it can survive summer.
Cashmere takes the color somewhere completely different.
With jeans, brown trousers or layered under a jacket, it stops reading as cute summer yellow and starts looking like something I could wear year after year.
Which is sort of the entire argument here.
And then sometimes I do still want cute summer yellow.
There is something about butter yellow on a simple top that makes an otherwise basic outfit feel intentional.
Jeans.
Gold jewellery.
Done.
No styling thesis required.

I especially like butter yellow in accessories because you get the color without needing to become The Person Wearing Yellow.
A small shoulder bag with an otherwise neutral outfit is exactly enough.
It adds a little something without taking over.
5. The gingham phone case

Cheerful, useful, and exactly the kind of trend purchase I like: something I was going to own anyway.
Technically not on me.
But my phone is attached to me approximately 23 hours a day, so I’ll allow it.
I also love trends most when they appear on things I was going to own anyway.
A yellow gingham phone case isn’t a major commitment.
It’s just cheerful.
Sometimes that is sufficient reason to buy something.
and… “Off Me, but Still with Me”
This is possibly where butter yellow has become even more interesting.
Because when a trend leaves your wardrobe and starts appearing naturally in the things you use every day, that’s when it begins to feel less like styling and more like taste.
She just may be the queen of the entire list. Naturally so, after being crowned KitchenAid color of the year in 2025. A high honor if you ask me.
Putting it in butter yellow almost feels too perfect?
Also, unlike a trendy top, this is the kind of thing that can sit in your kitchen for fifteen years.

This is the thing that gets filled with towels, snacks, sunscreen, somebody’s wet clothes and six objects you don’t remember packing.
Which makes the color choice even more fun.

Unnecessarily charming color.

A warm, livable way to bring butter yellow into a bedroom without committing the whole room to it.
I don’t know that I’d paint an entire bedroom butter yellow.
I would, however, absolutely put it on a bed.
Especially with white, cream, natural wood or a little bit of blue.
It makes a room feel warmer without tipping into overly designed.
And that distinction matters.
Maybe that’s why butter yellow lasted
The colors that stay usually aren’t the ones that demand the most attention.
They’re the ones that quietly make a lot of things look better.
Butter yellow doesn’t feel exciting because it’s new anymore.
It feels good because it’s warm.
Because it has personality without being loud.
Because it plays nicely with the things we already own.
